Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become an HTS Lay Counsellor at Phelisanang Bophelong?
You typically need a minimum of COSC/LGCSE or equivalent, plus a certificate in HIV Testing Services (HTS) from an accredited institution like the Ministry of Health or ICAP. Previous training in basic counselling and community health work is highly valued. Some positions may accept relevant volunteer experience in lieu of formal certification.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an HTS Lay Counsellor?
You will conduct HIV testing and counselling sessions, provide pre-test and post-test counselling, and maintain confidential client records. You will also refer clients to treatment or support services and conduct community outreach for testing awareness. Accurate data entry into national health information systems is a core duty.
How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Lesotho healthcare NGOs compared to government facilities?
NGOs like Phelisanang Bophelong often emphasize community-based outreach and flexible hours to reach rural populations, unlike fixed government clinic schedules. Employers expect strong Sesotho language skills and cultural sensitivity when working with diverse Basotho communities. Performance is typically measured by monthly testing targets and quality of counselling rather than just hours worked.
What career progression opportunities exist for HTS Lay Counsellours in Lesotho?
With experience, you can advance to Senior Counsellor, HTS Supervisor, or Community Health Coordinator roles within NGOs or the Ministry of Health. Further studies in public health, social work, or nursing can open doors to clinical or programme management positions. Many counsellours transition into adherence counselling, prevention programme coordination, or donor-funded project roles.
What benefits are typically offered for HTS Lay Counsellor positions in Lesotho?
Benefits vary by employer but commonly include paid annual leave, sick leave, and sometimes medical aid or health insurance coverage. Pension or provident fund contributions are more common in established NGOs and government secondments than in short-term project contracts. Always confirm benefits during the interview process as they differ significantly between fixed-term and permanent roles.
How should I apply for HTS Lay Counsellor roles, and what do Lesotho employers prioritize in candidates?
Apply through job portals like Maseru Metro, NGO websites, or directly at district health offices with your CV, certified copies of certificates, and HTS training credentials. Employers prioritize candidates with valid HTS certification, Sesotho and English fluency, and demonstrated experience in community health or voluntary counselling. Strong references from previous supervisors or community leaders significantly strengthen your application.
