What qualifications or certifications do I need to work in Technical and Vocational Education and Training at ACoL?
You typically need a Bachelor's degree in Education, Technical Education, or a relevant vocational field, with a teaching qualification being highly advantageous. Industry-recognized certifications in your trade area, such as plumbing, electrical work, or automotive mechanics, strengthen your application. ACoL may also value prior experience in curriculum development or assessment design for TVET programs.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities in this TVET role?
Your duties usually involve developing and reviewing competency-based assessment tools for vocational qualifications across Lesotho. You will conduct moderation of practical assessments at TVET colleges and collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure training standards meet labour market needs. Regular travel to institutions in Maseru and rural areas for quality assurance is common.
How does work culture and employer expectations differ in Lesotho compared to other countries?
Lesotho workplaces emphasize respect for hierarchy and formal communication, with punctuality and relationship-building highly valued. Employers expect flexibility, as you may need to adapt to infrastructure challenges and seasonal academic calendars. Demonstrating commitment to national development goals, such as reducing youth unemployment through skills training, is often appreciated.
What career progression opportunities exist for TVET professionals in Lesotho?
With experience, you can advance to senior assessor, curriculum specialist, or managerial roles within ACoL or the Ministry of Education. Some professionals transition to policy advisory positions or consulting for international development organizations focused on skills development. Further qualifications, such as a Master's in Educational Management, open doors to leadership in tertiary institutions.
What benefits typically come with contract positions in Lesotho's education sector?
Contract roles may include medical aid contributions, though coverage varies by employer and contract length. Pension benefits are less common for short-term contracts but may be negotiable for longer engagements. Annual leave entitlements usually follow the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, with 12 to 21 days being standard depending on contract duration.
How should I apply for TVET positions at ACoL, and what do employers prioritize?
Submit a detailed CV highlighting practical industry experience alongside academic credentials, as hands-on expertise is highly sought after. Include certified copies of qualifications, a cover letter addressing specific competencies, and references from previous TVET or assessment roles. Employers prioritize candidates who demonstrate understanding of Lesotho's National Qualifications Framework and current skills gaps in the local economy.
