Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and driving certifications do I need to become a driver at a parastatal like LHLDC?

You need a valid Lesotho driver's license appropriate for the vehicle class, typically a Class C or higher for light to heavy vehicles. A defensive driving certificate and a clean traffic record are highly valued. Some roles may require a minimum of Junior Certificate or Cambridge Overseas School Certificate.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a driver in a government-related organization?

You will transport staff to meetings, field sites, and official appointments across Lesotho's districts. Vehicle maintenance checks, logbook keeping, and ensuring passenger safety are core duties. You may also handle courier services and assist with logistics during events.

How does workplace culture and employer expectations differ for drivers in Lesotho compared to the private sector?

Parastatal employers emphasize punctuality, discretion, and protocol adherence when transporting senior officials. Dress codes are typically formal or uniform-based, and hierarchical respect is important. Job security tends to be stronger than in private sector driving roles.

What career progression opportunities exist for drivers in Lesotho's public and parastatal sectors?

With experience, you can advance to senior driver, transport officer, or fleet supervisor positions. Further studies in logistics or transport management at institutions like Limkokwing University or NUL can open administrative pathways. Some drivers transition to procurement or operations roles.

What benefits typically come with full-time driver positions at parastatals in Lesotho?

Benefits usually include pension contributions through the Lesotho National Pension Fund, medical aid options, and annual leave as per labour law. You may receive transport allowances, uniform provisions, and overtime pay for after-hours duties. Specific packages vary by employer and grade level.

How should I apply for driver positions, and what do Lesotho employers prioritize in candidates?

Apply through official channels such as newspaper advertisements, the LHLDC website, or the Public Service Commission when positions are advertised. Employers prioritize verified driving experience, references from previous employers, and a demonstrated record of reliability. Having a police clearance certificate and medical fitness report strengthens your application.
