Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a Member of the Governing Body at the Assessment Council of Lesotho?
You typically need a Master's degree in Education, Educational Assessment, or a related field, plus at least 10 years of senior experience in education policy or assessment systems. Membership of professional bodies like the Lesotho Teachers' Association or regional assessment organizations strengthens your application.
What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this governing body role?
You will attend quarterly board meetings to set examination policies, review assessment standards, and oversee the integrity of national examinations like LGCSE and LEC. Between meetings, you review committee reports, provide strategic guidance to management, and represent ACoL at Ministry of Education stakeholder forums.
How does the contract arrangement work for this position in Lesotho?
Governing body members typically serve on fixed-term contracts of 3 to 5 years, renewable based on performance and government reappointment. Contracts specify meeting attendance requirements, honoraria or sitting allowances rather than full salaries, and clear conflict-of-interest disclosures for members with education sector ties.
What benefits can I expect as a contract member of a statutory body in Lesotho?
Benefits usually include sitting allowances per meeting, transport reimbursement for official travel, and professional liability coverage. Unlike permanent employees, contract members generally do not receive medical aid, pension contributions, or annual leave entitlements through the Council.
How can I advance my career after serving on the Assessment Council governing body?
This role positions you for senior appointments such as Commissioner of Education, leadership roles at examination bodies like SACAI or WAEC, or advisory positions with UNESCO and UNICEF education programs. Many former members also transition to university professorships or consultancy work in Southern African assessment reform.
What do employers like ACoL look for when selecting governing body members?
They prioritize demonstrated integrity, deep knowledge of Lesotho's education challenges, and proven stakeholder management across government, teachers' unions, and private schools. Strong applicants show prior board experience, published work on assessment policy, and active networks within the Southern African education community.
