What qualifications or education do I need to become a Peer Navigator at Phelisanang Bophelong?

Most employers require a minimum of COSC or LGCSE, though a certificate or diploma in social work, community health, or counseling is advantageous. Lived experience with HIV, TB, or key populations is often highly valued alongside formal training. Some organizations may require short courses in peer education or adherence counseling offered by local NGOs or the Ministry of Health.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Peer Navigator?

You will conduct home visits to support clients with medication adherence, accompany them to health facilities, and facilitate support groups in communities. Data collection and reporting using Ministry of Health tools is essential, as is linking clients to social services and legal aid. You will also conduct community sensitization and stigma reduction activities.

How does the work culture and employer expectations differ in Lesotho compared to other countries?

Employers expect strong community networks and respect for local chiefs and traditional leaders when entering villages. Punctuality is valued, but flexibility is required due to terrain and weather challenges in mountainous areas. Building trust through patience and consistent follow-up is prioritized over rapid outcomes.

What career progression opportunities exist for Peer Navigators in Lesotho's healthcare sector?

With experience, you can advance to Senior Peer Navigator, Program Officer, or Community Coordinator roles within NGOs. Further studies in public health or social work can open doors to monitoring and evaluation or program management positions. Some transition into government health inspector or adherence counselor roles within the Ministry of Health.

What benefits are typically offered for Peer Navigator positions in Lesotho?

Benefits vary by employer but commonly include paid annual leave, sick leave, and sometimes medical aid or health insurance. Pension contributions through the Lesotho National Pension Fund may be offered by larger NGOs. Transport allowances or motorbike provision for fieldwork are frequent in rural postings.

How should I apply and what do employers look for in candidates?

Apply directly to organizations like Phelisanang Bophelong or through local job boards and Ministry of Health announcements. Employers prioritize candidates with strong interpersonal skills, local language fluency, and demonstrated commitment to community work. Include references from community leaders or previous volunteer work, and be prepared for practical assessments during interviews.
